This item is completely waterproof, due to the way it was crafted, using a Shou sugi ban, which is the art of preserving and finishing wood using fire. Traditionally it is for Japanese Cedar, but the same technique can be used on any wood. It has a beautiful finish.

More about the shou sugi ban wood burning technique: it originated in Japan in the 18th century primarily as way to treat cedar siding to make it weatherproof. It's done by charring a wood surface to render it a deep charcoal-black... and has caught on recently as a treatment for contemporary exteriors and indoor furnishings alike. You can even find variations elevated to fine art, as in the work of the artist Maarten Baas.

This incredible painting was panted live at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Bio on Artist, Terry Womble: Art is everywhere and can be almost anything. I have been described in the media of being remenistic of Jackson Pollock and my performances have been compared to the late Denny Dent. Most critics comment on what they call my superb natural color palette, use of motion & energy. 90% of all paintings are created live during the Colorado summer festival and arts events in front of crowds. I have been painting for well over 30 years and have stopped counting creations at 3,500 a year ago. Most of these works have been sold through events and a brokerage house in NY.
